Sunday funday
We had the blessing today of joining a local Kenyan church for their service. Pastor Joseph is a significant friend of SWOK and has various independent churches all around the Nakuru area. The one we visited today was Christ Empowerment Church and way out in a very remote area! It was nearly a two hour drive each way, heading south from Nakuru. About half the distance was on paved road and the other half on rocky paths and hills and gullies. Only the most well built cars and trucks can make the trek. We travelled in three vans and the pickup, since we had a lot of SWOK students as well as 2400+ pounds of foodstuffs for the Loaves and Fishes food distribution.
The services for this small remote church normally take place inside a tiny building that might hold 30-40 people crowded toy, and we probably had 200 counting our Team. They had constructed a tent to allow us all to fit, and many were still out in the open. With the long trip, we got there after the praise and worship had started. We joined right in for praise and worship and drums and dancing for at least another half hour before Dale Plummer gave a great message as the visiting pastor. His message was enthusiastically received by all both in English and translated into Swahili by SWOK student Moses.
Following the service, we were excused to leave temporarily, where we quietly set up to distribute T-shirt dresses and shorts to all the young boys and girls in attendance. These had been lovingly made by the sewing women of Helen Turner's team at Bethlehem Church.
In addition, we set up the stations for the Loaves and Fishes distribution to sixty families in the church. This is intended to provide staples and provisions of rice, corn meal, flour, beans, soap, etc. for a month for a family is is provided through Team funds donated over and above our trip costs. It's amazing the response we receive and the blessing we get being able to do this. And out cost is no more than about $24/family. We had a blessed day with them and wonderful fellowship.
