Safely in Kenya
The last 26 hours have been filled with lots of travel activities. We left Pennsylvania by coach bus Sunday morning before 5:30 am and had smooth sailing to JFK airport before 9:00 am. It was a lot different than if we were leaving on a workday! Our departure was only slightly delayed from the 1:45 pm schedule, and we had an uneventful 13 & 1/2 hour flight to Nairobi. We made it through Customs with the usual amount of underhanded agents trying to extract their standard “duty” (read: “graft”). for the vision care and other supplies we are bringing into the country to give away. It’s become just a normal hardship of doing business here.
We got checked into the airport Crowne Plaza Hotel, and their hotel bus took us to the Karen area of Nairobi for lunch and a visit to the popular Giraffe Centre. Here, you get to see Rothschild Giraffes up close and personal and to feed them by hand from the elevated walkways. We got a chance there to finally take a Team picture, since we’ve not all been together previously to get a Team shot. The ten of us plus intern Bella will be ministering together for the next eleven days with a bill and Chat and their wonderful group of SWOK education students and staff. We were back to our hotel early for a good night’s sleep and aground travel day. We will take the opportunity tomorrow to do an early morning wildlife tour of the Nairobi National Park before driving north west to Nakuru by safari van to our base for the remainder of our time in Kenya.
